Coronavirus Positivity

This is not a ‘Here’s what we’re doing in the wake of COVID-19.’ The team at LARG*net continues to work hard to serve members’ needs. We serve the health care community and have assisted with spinning up temporary facilities. Extra bandwidth has been allocated as traffic patterns shift to accommodate teleworking and online classes. We understand that all members are swamped at this time and encourage you to get ahead of potential future problems by planning now.

Folding@Home

The first thing I want to shout out is the Folding@Home project, a biomedical research firm that relies on volunteer computing power. They are working on Coronavirus proteins to search for new therapeutic opportunities.

Nvidia caught wind of the project and has at least doubled their volunteer compute allowing significant expansion.

Cisco

The awesome folks at Cisco are offering free services to facilitate productivity during social distancing. They initially offered free WebEx and have expanded the offer to include Duo, Umbrella, and AnyConnect. Check our their blog for more info.

Apache Guacamole

The Apache Software Foundation is best known for their web server project but they have hundreds of software projects. The Apache Guacamole project is a fairly new one but is quickly gaining popularity. This HTML5 VNC, RDP, and SSH gateway allows anyone to set up remote access to their computer(s) or network.

Vmware

They are offering Horizon Cloud on Azure for 45 days free. They are also offering Workspace One for 30 days free. Both of which can help provide a Desktop to work from.

Family and Neighbours

Be sure to send messages to your family and friends in healthcare and emergency services to let them know you appreciate what they are doing and find out if there’s anything you can do to help.

Call your family, talk to them, use video calls. This is the time to be together even if you’re physically separate. Reach out to your elderly neighbours and make sure they’re ok, chances are they aren’t as tech savvy as you and may not be comfortable ordering food or other necessities online.

Italian neighbours are playing music for each other. In Spain group workouts are being led from balconies.

People who are forced to cancel their weddings are still getting married. Life can go on.

Future

Are we looking at the future of work? Is this the end of shopping in person? Nobody knows what the long term effects of COVID-19 will be but seeing communities come together to help each other out indicates the future is bright.
